Workshops

The LiRiC summer school workshops explore both quantitative and qualitative methodologies for collecting and exploiting data. In a perspective of interculturality, inclusion and remediation, and exploring the theme of this summer school (« identity »), participants will collect data on linguistic identity in the first workshop, and exploit it in the second workshop.

Data collection: As a first step, participants will be invited to develop their research field, in groups, according to a theme and a research question. From these prerequisites inherent in any scientific approach, participants will discover various methods, starting with the creation of a questionnaire, moving on to the issues involved in interviews, and ending with the implementation of an ethnographic approach. The theoretical sessions will be accompanied by practical exercises to help the groups place themselves in various research positions. By the end of the workshop, each group will have built up a corpus that will be used in the second workshop. A discussion with the speakers will conclude the first day's work.

Data analysis: Once we have a set of data, what do we do? Since the data may represent realities that we would like to discover, we need to describe them as exhaustively as possible. In an interactive format, participants will be asked to organise and analyse their data. Scientific observations will be made using qualitative and quantitative methods. Participants will be encouraged to draw conclusions from these observations, but but it would be wise to be mindful of potential pitfalls. The many biases that can interfere in this reflection will be addressed during this workshop. Finally, participants practise exploring the implications, limitations and prospects of their findings. At the end of the workshop, we will debrief together on what you've learned from this experience.
